Why Daredevil’s Rumored Echo Appearance Is A Bad Idea

Charlie Cox’s Daredevil looks primed to appear in Marvel’s upcoming Disney + series Echofollowing his brief cameo in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, but that would be a bad idea. Starring Alaqua Cox as the titular hero also known as Maya Lopez, Echo is yet to begin filming and remains without a confirmed plot or supporting cast. Nonetheless, Echo costume designer Stacy Caballero accidentally may have spoiled it when her resume listed Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin as part of the series’ cast. While D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk should suit Echo well due to his apparent death at the hands of Maya in Hawkeye‘s finale, Daredevil’s presence would likely end up an unnecessary cameo despite his comic book history.

Should Daredevil and Kingpin’s paths lead them to Echo, Maya would reunite with two familiar faces from the comics. In the Marvel comics, Maya’s father William “Crazy Horse” Lincoln worked alongside Fisk before the latter killed him. Kingpin then took Maya under his wing, teaching her how to fight and convincing her that Daredevil was responsible for her father’s death. After serving as Fisk’s protégé, Maya eventually defied Fisk’s manipulation and allied with Murdock after engaging in several fights with Daredevil. Given Daredevil’s absence from Hawkeyewhich already accomplished Maya’s break from Fisk, his entrance in Echo is not necessary. Marvel should continue to develop Maya’s character and her opposition to Kingpin and save Daredevil for another story.

Maya’s MCU debut in Hawkeye covered her backstory and relationships with Kingpin, Kazi Kazimierczak, and the Tracksuit Mafia. Through the first four episodes, Maya was positioned as one of the series’ most prominent characters alongside Clint Barton and Kate Bishop but was unfortunately sidelined in Hawkeye‘s finale – which saw Yelena Belova share the episode’s biggest moments with the aforementioned heroes. Obviously, Clint and Kate were always the focus of Hawkeye‘s narrative, but as Maya takes center stage in her solo series, she deserves to shine without any big cameos overshadowing her. The involvement of a scene-stealing figure such as Daredevil and the hype around Charlie Cox’s official extended return to the MCU would sour a brilliant opportunity to showcase Echo as the MCU’s most compelling new character.

Echo‘s plot will likely resume after Maya’s rebellion against Fisk and Kazi when she learned that Fisk orchestrated her father’s killing. Hawkeye‘s exclusion of Murdock in this crucial moment in Maya’s arc makes Daredevil’s presence unneeded in Echo, as Marvel has already deviated from the comics’ story. Furthermore, it’s still unknown whether the MCU’s Daredevil and Kingpin are the same ones from their original TV series, so there is not an obligation to pay off Murdock and Fisk’s unique history. If Echo takes place in Hell’s Kitchen, one might expect Daredevil to show up at some point, but Marvel would benefit from a simpler approach. While the MCU has defined its Phase 4 by ambition through its complex storylines involving an array of characters and universes, its stories have often come across as overstuffed with cameos. Instead of attempting to complete a multitude of plotlines as it did in HawkeyeMarvel can tell the best story in Echo by solely focusing on Maya and her closest relationships.

While Marvel is yet to confirm Charlie Cox’s casting in Echo, the character’s possible role in the show should warrant some skepticism. Daredevil’s successful solo series and recent MCU debut will likely pave the way for future roles, thus, the character is bound to reappear soon regardless. With Echo‘s storyline still unknown, perhaps Marvel can incorporate Daredevil without overshadowing its main hero, though this is a question that will have to wait for its final outcome.
