SPOILERS for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness lie ahead …
Academy Award winner Charlize Theron has shared an official image of her surprising mid-credits appearance in the recently released Marvel sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Sharing an image of her character on social media, Clea, standing alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular Master of the Mystic Arts, Theron captioned the images with a simple “Meet Clea,” with the character expected to have a major impact on the MCU and the continuing adventures of Doctor Strange.
Created by Marvel Comics legends Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Clea appears human but has much more interesting biology than that. The daughter of Umar, a resident of the “Dark Dimension” and member of the Faltines, a race of higher-dimensional energy beings, Clea is also the niece of the demonic tyrant Dormammu. Who MCU fans will remember as the villain of the first Doctor Strange back in 2016. Clea is a hugely powerful sorcerer, and is sometimes the ruler of the Dark Dimension, with the character likely to have a big role in Doctor Strange 3.
Charlize Theron is a hugely talented actress known for roles in the likes of such action movie fare as Mad Max: Fury Road, the Fast and Furious franchise, The Old Guardand Atomic Blondeas well as powerful dramas such as Bombshell, Tullyand Pattern for which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Theron makes her MCU debut in a mid-credits scene at the end (obviously) of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Chastising the good Doctor for causing a multiversal “incursion,” she and Strange quickly take off into the Dark Dimension in order to once again attempt to bring the multiverse under control. Theron is draped in a pretty comic-accurate costume, with the actress sporting white-blonde hair and a purple superhero suit. Elements that will be very familiar to fans of the character.
Clea is Expected to Become a New Love Interest for Doctor Strange
In the pages of Marvel Comics, Clea is also often an important love interest for Doctor Strange, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron recently revealing that, while this will likely be the case in the MCU, there will be much more to Clea than that.
“We always knew we wanted to introduce Clea, who in the comics is you could say the great love of Doctor Strange, but really in a lot of ways his formidable equal as a sorcerer herself,” the writer said. “Her backstory is fascinating, she’s the niece of Dormammu, the giant floating head from the first movie.”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees Doctor Stephen Strange continue to attempt to bring order back to the multiverse. The Marvel hero must unite with The Sorcerer Supreme, Wong, in order to protect America Chavez, a teenager who can travel through the multiverse, from a rampaging Wanda Maximoff. Along the way, Doctor Strange will come across all manner of alternate worlds and alternate versions of himself and others.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is out now in theaters, and has seen huge success, quickly becoming the third highest-grossing movie of the year.
