Marvel Studios’ upcoming Halloween special, which will reportedly center on Werewolf by Night, has officially begun filming.
The Direct spotted an update to Georgia’s official list of productions, which shows a Disney + TV special using the working title “Buzzcut” is currently filming in the state. Not only is Georgia the home to numerous Marvel Studios productions, but “Buzzcut” was revealed to be the working title for the Halloween special last year when production on the Werewolf by Night project was scheduled to kick off early in 2022.
In August 2021, word emerged that a Disney + Halloween special centered on Werewolf by Night was in the works for the following October. Marvel has yet to release any official news or statement about the project, but that has not stopped it from moving along. Last November, Gael García Bernal was cast as the central werewolf in the Halloween special, though sources remain unclear about whether he’ll actually play Werewolf by Night.
The first Werewolf by Night was Jack Russell, created by Gerry Conway, Roy Thomas, and Mike Ploog for 1972’s Marvel Spotlight # 2. The character eventually landed his own series and has had frequent run-ins with vampires and other supernatural forces in the Marvel universe. He’s also notably rubbed shoulders with Moon Knight and Blade, and Mahershala Ali’s undead vampire hunter will reportedly debut during the Halloween special.
Marvel launched a new Werewolf by Night series in April 2020, with Jake Gomez becoming the new lycanthrope in a book from Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff and Scot Eaton. In this version, Jake is also known as Red Wolf, a member of the Hopi tribe whose family has been cursed with lycanthropy. It’s possible Bernal will play this take on the character, though details on the project are still incredibly scarce.
Along with Bernal’s MCU debut, famed composer Michael Giacchino will direct the Halloween special. The musician, known for scoring Solved, The Batmanand all three MCU Spider-Man films, will be stepping behind the camera for the first time to tackle the project. Outside of his debut as a director, his compositions can next be heard when Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in July.
Marvel’s currently untitled Halloween special does not yet have a release date, but it’s expected to arrive this October on Disney +.
