WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Hulk # 5, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
The Hulk is one of the most powerful figures in the Marvel Universe, with his strength and endurance making him one of the most impressive beings on the planet. But it now turns out that his powers might extend beyond pure physical strength.
In Hulk # 5, by Donny Cates, Ryan Ottley, Cliff Rathburn, Frank Martin, and VC’s Cory Petit, the Starship version of the Jade Giant just revealed a powerful new skill that gives Marvel’s strongest fighter an ability similar to that of the X-Men’s Cyclops .
The Hulk’s powers have evolved multiple times over the years, and the current Hulk series focuses on Bruce Banner having attained a new level of control over the Hulk, utilizing him like a starship from within the doctor’s mind. By throwing dangerous mental projections of the Hulk’s oldest friends and foes at him, Banner can induce more rage within the Hulk to the point where even kaiju-level threats can do little to slow him down. But things have gotten out of hand in an alternate reality where Thunderbolt Ross was able to become the President of the United States.
Ross is in control of several Abominations that have been created as weapons of mass destruction on his world, and he shows no qualms about unleashing them against Starship Hulk. However, Banner is no longer in control of himself, with a dark mental projection of Betty Banner instead taking control of the Hulk and unleashing the full power of the creature against the Abominations. Among the powers accessed by the Jade Giant during the battle is a blast of energy emitted from his eyes in a manner similar to Cyclops’ optic blasts.
This is a genuinely surprising moment, especially considering the Hulk’s traditional power set. However, this may indicate that the abilities of the newest version of the Hulk are still evolving. Notably, the optic blasts seem to operate in a manner similar to Cyclops’ powers, exploding out of his eyes with a crimson color. Even better, the blasts appear to be as powerful as the Hulk himself, with a single blast producing enough energy to blast one of the Abominations apart with a single shot. There’s a chance that the Hulk’s new laser eyes might become more powerful based on his emotions in a way similar to his physical strength. This suggests that the monster’s optic blasts could theoretically become even more powerful than those of the seasoned mutant, who has demonstrated power sufficient enough to level mountains and demolish buildings.
This revelation is yet another reminder that the Hulk is always changing and gaining new advantages, often at the expense of the monster becoming even more uncontrollable. With his new ranged ability, the Hulk will be even harder to bring down, especially when he comes face to face with Thor. There is also the possibility that this power boost is just the beginning, and the Jade Giant may have even more powerful tricks up his sleeves.
