Like the CBS / Paramount + series Star Trek Strange New Worlds throwing itself towards a release date in mid-2022, rabid Trekkies have started expressing their opinions online. For a non-canonical episodic prequel, many fans have taken a pessimistic view of the series, especially considering the overwhelming recent shows like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard.
While some optimism can be found on online forums, the overwhelming consensus is that fans have very low hopes for Strangely new Worlds restores glory to the proud Star Trek franchise.
Will fail under Alex Kurtzman’s leadership
Based on the checkered track record from author Alex Kurtzman, who will be overseeing the new anticipated Paramount + show after writing the two recent Star Trek film and creation Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds is bound to fail under his leadership.
This is one of the most common refrains on Save your boards in which Starch Wreck says “nothing they can produce, especially with the strange Kurtzman ideas, bad plot arches, altered ships, and uniforms, will be worthless.” With 34 votes up, another simply says “Is Robert Kurtzman affiliated? If so, then I have 0 interest.”
Basic Star Trek Discovery 2.0
Despite being billed as a prequel that tells Captain Pike’s background story, a Redditor is convinced that the show “for all purposes” will be “STD S2 2.0.” Translation, Strange new worlds will not be different than Star Trek: Discovery season 2.
Among the reasons for the prediction, Redditor notes Phaethona’s “NuTrek Pike, NuTrek Spock (” I love science “), made by Kurtzman and co., Made 1o years before LASS and limited by cannon. That is, the poster has zero faith that Kurtzman will learn from the mistakes shown in Star Trek: Discovery and atoned for them with his latest endeavor.
Higher budget and better looks
In a rare optimistic prediction found on Save your, jimmyray01 strongly feels that the original CBS / Paramount show will benefit from having a larger budget compared to the original series. He says, “the original series was a very cheap show that was mainly dependent on history, the new generation of shows had much higher budgets, but there were no real digital cameras or digital technology.”
Jimmy goes on to claim “I think Strange new worlds is really going to look spectacular, they did not manage to do that with Discovery, they were trying to do something strange Game of Thrones / Battlestar Galactica mashup, but I think SNW will look great. “
Return to a more classic style
While Jimmyrayo1 predicts that the show will boast a more advanced visual marvel, LeftLiner imagines Strange new worlds adheres to the classic style of Star Trek: The Original Series. The poster claims “I think there’s a chance SNW will go back to a more classic style, which would be nice. “
Faced with some skepticism, LeftLiner adds, “but I’m still worried because Disco and Picard both suffer from poor writing and it is not a matter of style. Plus, they will continue this trend by revisiting old ones Star Trek, about worshiping the series’ own myths, which just limit the franchise so much. “Again, even when a bit of optimism is expressed, distrust of Kurtzman is a recurring motif one cannot overlook.
Will restore faith in hardcore trekkies
Another rare positive prediction regarding SNW comes from Redditor tejdog1, who feels the show will score big kudos among hardcore Trekkies based on the huge success of the two main Captain Pike episodes on Star Trek: Discovery Season 2.
Tejdog1 states that “they have a chance to do some great goodwill here as well as hit hardcore Trekkies right in the feeling. I do not know if it will, but the fact that they hit the two Pike-centered episodes out of the park gives me hope. ” Redditor even goes so far as to predict a canonical plotline in which “Enterprise is ordered to the planet Gamma Triangulai VI, an urgent situation has developed between the native Sheliak and the USS Intrepid. Our mission is to spread the tension and reach agreement with these Sheliak . ” It’s now a prediction!
Will be the crown jewel of the franchise
Redditor ParkMan73 is one of the more optimistic supporters of the new show and claims “my gut feeling tells me Strange new worlds will be the crown jewel because it is a traditional Star Trek show set aboard NCC-1701. The authors will have learned some lessons from Picard and Discovery which will hopefully help. I do not expect any Tilly maneuvers on this show. “
Far from the most insatiable Trekkies on Reddit, ray of hope for the caliber of writing on the new CBS Star Trek spinoff has as much value as any other online prediction so far.
Will make Star Trek Enterprise look like a masterpiece
After explaining their reasoning for a long time, Redditor drops the protovack microphone by saying “I think so (SNW) Will do Enterprise look like a masterpiece. “Predicts production to repeat the same mistakes that were doomed Discovery, predicts protovak writers who try to “overshadow specific LASS episodes, but abuses the material and ends up destroying the legacy from LASS. “
Protovak also predicts overconsumption of fake-like CGI, a low budget, and recycled sets and props, and production overreacts to fans’ demands for episodic storytelling.
Whatever happens, Anson Mount will be amazing
Whether the show turns out to be quality enough to see, collective opinions on Save your predict that Anson Mount will give an amazing performance as Captain Christopher Pike. Falafelbot predicts “there will be talent on the show. Mount, of course, is amazing.”
In another thread, Plannedfiction states: “Anson Mount is excellent, and if the show stinks, I do not think it will be his fault. And boy oh boy, he sees that role.” A poster called deicous responds with “even though it (the show) is bad, we’ll have some amazing Pike moments with him (Mount) and the cast. Time and time again, the Redditors expect nothing but a great performance from Mount as Pike.
Is simply a marketing game
One of the more bizarre predictions comes from Razkal719, who takes a macroconspiratorial stance on Strange new worlds. Allegedly, the show is being produced as a marketing ploy to empower global investors in CBS / Paramount’s streaming service during the pandemic.
“It’s a PR ploy,” says Razkal719, adding: “They (CBS) are in a financial position and want to make the network and especially the streaming service look more attractive to foreign investors. Bad Robot did the same when they announced fourth Kelvin Star Trek movie. They announced that Tarantino would make one Star Trek movie. This is all that TV equivalent of vaporware. “In fact, Tarantino’s film is still stuck in development hell.
Will look like A Sh **** BSG
Probably the most cynical prediction about SNW comes from alexbond45, who got a nice share of the votes just to say “I do not fall for their empty promises. It will probably just be sh **** Battlestar Galactica. “
Unfortunately, no further explanation is needed, as there has been a long-standing comparative rift between Star Trek and BSG faithful, both of whom often accuse the other of plagiarism. More judgmental yet, the general consensus on any new Star Trek property, SNW included is that fans do not feel they are in safe hands behind the camera. Until it changes, the perception of Star Trek will not change.
