Jonah Hill shares a funny story of consumer lockdown with Leo DiCaprio

Do not look up star Jonah Hill shared a funny story about using the lockdown with Leonardo DiCaprio during the filming. Do not look up, which premiered on Netflix on December 24, 2021, has DiCaprio starring as an astronomy professor who is part of a team that discovers that a comet is speeding towards Earth. Jonah Hill plays Jason Orlean, son and chief of staff to the president (Meryl Streep), who wants to politicize and ignore the discovery to distract from her recent sex scandal. In just one month, Do not look up became the second most watched Netflix movie ever.

This is not the first time the duo has worked together. Their very first shared film credit was Quentin Tarantino western Django Unchained, where Jonah Hill had a short cameo. The next year, they played properly together in Martin Scorsese’s Jordan Belfort biography The Wolf of Wall Street, which was nominated for five Oscars, including acting for both men. The two have clearly formed a bond, to in addition to hold back for Do not look up last year, in 2019, the couple co-produced the Clint Eastwood thriller Richard Jewell.

talking with W magazine, Jonah Hill, explained that the COVID pandemic, although terrible, made him re-prioritize how important it was to have fun in his life. He suggested to DiCaprio that the two live together while filming Do not look up in Boston, and DiCaprio agreed. Hill says that because of the lockdown, “we could not go to restaurants so we lived in a house together and watched tons of movies.“Read the full quote below:

Covid was awful, but it made me re-prioritize the value of being irreverent and funny. I thought we should all just laugh! While we were locked up, Leonardo DiCaprio and I decided to live together in Boston during the making of the movie. We could not go to restaurants, so we lived in a house together and watched tons of movies.

Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street

Do not look up was filmed from November 2020 to February 2021, at a time when broad vaccine access was only on the verge of coming to the United States. Cases also grew with particular vigor this holiday season, so their options for offset entertainment were limited to none. What movies they watched together and whether they could have influenced the performance they ended up giving in the movie is a question that may never be answered.

Do not look up has received mixed reviews overall, but it has clearly cemented in the bond between the two co-stars. It will be interesting to see what the couple finds next time, because they obviously gel well with each other’s sensitivities. DiCaprio is not typically known for the kind of comic film that Jonah Hill made before moving on to more price-oriented material, but Do not look up is certainly a place where their acting sensibilities really meet in the middle. Maybe the time will come when DiCaprio will completely cross the line to play the lead role in an unmanageable Jonah Hill comedy like Superbad or Jump Street 21.
