HITMAN 3 review – Baldy is back with a steely revenge

Hitman 3, the latest in IO Interactive’s Hitman World of Assassination trilogy, provides a fitting end to the series for fans of Agent 47. The game does very little in terms of new gameplay mechanisms, but the graphics overhaul is significant and can sometimes get you to pause and experience the beauty of the world. People who could have played Hitman 1 and Hitman 2 from the World of Assassination series would know how the story arc has taken a more personal approach, and it continues and comes to a satisfying conclusion in Hitman 3. There were no flying suitcases in either this game.

HITMAN 3 story

One of the big changes with Hitman 3 is that the game takes a more linear approach at certain levels to sharpen players’ focus on Agent 47’s story instead of giving them free control to do what they want. Although this change may be annoying at first, but if you break through, you will realize why the developers took such a call. It all comes down to history.

HITMAN 3 review – Baldy is back with a steely revenge

What starts as a series of seemingly interrupted ICA murder contracts in Hitman 1 is soon revealed to be part of a shadow client’s tricks to unravel and destroy a secret organization called Providence that uses ICA as a puppet. Midway through the first game, both organizations realize what the shadow client has done. Providence sends its own agents to chase the shadow client, and so does ICA.

In Hitman 2, it is later revealed that the Shadow client is another cloned assassin from the same facility as Agent 47, and the two had undertaken to overthrow Providence when they found out that the organization was responsible for their creation. We know how much chaos a genetically engineered super-killer can cause, so two would only make things … more fun. Both 47 and Lucas Gray (aka The Shadow Client) destroy the key people who run the supply, but it is learned that the actual perpetrators have had their identities hidden through a detailed hierarchical structure, which is divided to the extent that only one person knows the identity of all the perpetrators. Yes, the game uses a lot of Scooby Do-like plot mechanisms which unravel the actual perpetrators to be another all the time.

Hitman 3 begins with you knowing the identities of all three culprits and you’re out to kill them all. Without spoiling the story for you, we can tell you that the story does not end with the three culprits. To be a super secret organization that has its eerily long fingers hooked on big corporations, governments and other circles of power; Providence is not that easy to beat. And that’s where most of the fun lies.

HITMAN 3 gameplay

Not much has changed. In fact, it can be said that Hitman 1, 2 and 3 are all the same game with little new gameplay mechanisms. Early on, you get access to a new camera gadget that allows you to hack and unlock doors and windows. However, this seems to be a forced addition just to add something new. The old lock pick could have done the job much better. But the camera that is inserted into your driver brings a certain modern view to the job.

And with unlocking, the new concept brings with it persistent shortcuts. If you unlock certain doors or paths in one replay, they remain unlocked for subsequent replays. While this can be seen as an improvement in the quality of life, it removes the element of challenge from subsequent replays. The developers say that this opens up more possibilities, we do not see it from the same perspective.

HITMAN 3 Carpathians Romania's train mission

The new Hitman world of assassinaiton trilogy has gained a good reputation for its elaborate level designs. Hitman 3 continues this legacy with the same level of detail. The developers have put a lot of work into each of the six levels of the game and it can be seen. From the first mission in Dubai to the subsequent ones in Dartmoor, Mendoza, Berlin and Chongqing, the worlds are massive and offer several opportunities to go about them.

However, this is not how it feels during the first replay. Do you remember how the developers decided to make things a little linear with Hitman 3? Well, that’s why. The first replay feels a bit straightforward, and this is where the ‘persistent shortcuts’ mechanism helps. It opens the levels to a more sandbox structure when you finish the first replay. The developers basically tell you that the story means a lot in Hitman 3, and it’s best that you review it once as it was meant to be played before embarking on the sandbox approach. There is nothing that strikes this point other than the last mission of the game.

Then there are levels that are quite different from what all Hitman games have been so far. We all got goals and the practical Instinct vision would make things super obvious. But one of the levels leaves you in the lurch because it is you who is being hunted and you have no idea who everyone is after you. If you’ve been playing Hitman in a certain way until now, the Berlin level will really make you rethink and change your whole style of play. In our opinion, this was a great addition to the game.

HITMAN 3 graphics

With each release in the World of Assassination trilogy, IO Interactive has significantly upgraded the game’s graphics. This is evident from the very first mission in Dubai, where you parachute up to the top of the world’s tallest building and are greeted with a ridiculous amount of reflections that are really well done. IOI has upgraded their Glacier Engine to incorporate screen space reflections along with rendering for texture methods to really make materials pop and appear lifelike. Whether it’s reflective glass panels, water or just shiny globes placed along the levels, the engine has really * coughed * shone * host * through. One could even say that the game puts NVIDIA’s RTX to shame with their implementation of reflections. Yes, the game does not have RTX, but it is not that we feel its absence in any way.

Even the older levels have been upgraded to incorporate the new features. Of course, you have to play the older levels via Hitman 3 and not from your older purchases to witness this. Putting Hitman 1, 2 and 3 side by side really shows how far the game engine has come. The Chongqing level really takes it up with dark images characterized by lots of neon lights, and the addition of rain is the icing on the cake.

HITMAN 3 dom

Not much has changed on the surface of Hitman 3, but the game makes significant changes in the things that matter. Sure, some of these changes have been seen as controversial and as deviant from the Hitman path, but we can see how it really adds value. Overall, the game is a great addition to the World of Assissination trilogy and brings a fitting ending to the series.
