In an interview with Game Informer about the launch of God of War’s very good pc port, creative director Cory Barlog suggested that the latest wave of PlayStation games coming to PC started with enthusiasm from Sony’s studios.
“I think it was the group of studies all over it that said this is a really good idea. We should investigate this,” Barlog said. “Eventually, I think it reached that turning point. After we had sent so many proposal box proposals, they were like, ‘I’m tired of hearing all this. Fine, we’re doing this.’
Sony first announced that it would bring exclusive PlayStation games to the PC in March 2020, starting with Horizon Zero Dawn. According to God of Wars developers, its PC port has taken about two years, which means it got started right around the time Sony announced its first PC plans.
It makes sense that PlayStation developers would largely go in to see their games in the hands of multiple players, as Barlog said – it’s a little more cumbersome to imagine that a $ 150 billion company ended up deciding on to release games on pc just because it studio heads grabbed it long enough. According to former Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Shawn Layden, who left in October 2019, Sony’s management was keen to reach new customers.
“The strategy that we developed when I was there was to go out where the new customers are, where the new fans could be,” said Layden last year. “We’re going to where they are … Because they have decided not to come to my house, so I have to go to their house now. And what is the best way to go to their house? Why not take a of our best-selling games? “
Layden said he did not expect Sony to ever start releasing games on PC Day 1 with consoles – it does not have to risk cannibalizing console sales if it waits two years to transfer its games to PC.
According to Barlog, it is still not a given that future games will come to PC, and he has “no idea” when the next God of War game, Ragnarok, may arrive. Although the studies got Sony to try out PC ports, it sounds like they are still not the ones making the last call.
“Right now we’re taking it one game at a time, just like we’re looking at each one and deciding, ‘Okay, is this the best thing?’” Barlog said. “And we will measure how it does. Do people enjoy it? Did we do it right? Is there anything we have done wrong? What can we do better in the future if we do it again? But in the end, in the end it’s Sony’s decision. “
