The SAG Awards announced their nominee, nomination Play squid and Coda up to history along the way. Coda continues to garner nominations with its SAG Award nomination for Outstanding Performance of a Cast in a Film, as well as Supporting Male Actor for Troy Kotsur. Troy Kotsur is one of them CODA‘s ensemble who are deaf and they are the first disabled artists to receive nominations in the SAG Awards 28 years. In the meantime, King Richard, which has a majority of non-white cast, also received a nomination, as did its leading man, Will Smith. He shares his category with The tragedy of Macbeth‘s Denzel Washington. All eyes are guaranteed to be on Denzel and Will, as both performed incredibly well, as did all the male nominees in this year’s nomination.

In SAG’s TV nominations, Play squid has become the first non-English series and first Korean series to achieve a nomination for outstanding performance of an ensemble in a drama (its stunt ensemble has also received an nomination for action performance). Previously, only three projects with full or majority Asian actors have been recognized. The previous nominations for foreign nominations of an Asian cast all have on the film side: Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, Parasite in 2020 and Threaten last year. Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon add SAG Award nominations for male and female actors to the show’s impressive nominations. Lee Jung-jae is the first male actor from Asia and Korea to receive an individual SAG Award nomination, and the second of Asian descent (after Darren Criss in 2019) to receive one for the TV nomination category. In her acting debut, Lee Jung-jae is the second actress of Asian as well as the first of South Korean nationality to do the same. The first was Asian-American Sandra Oh, who achieves her third career nomination this year, this time in the comedy-TV category for The chair.

Leading the film nominations are House of Gucci and The power of the dog. While Ted Lasso and Succession leads the herd in TV nominations.

This year’s nominations were announced on Instagram Live by Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens. For a complete list of nominations click here.
