Why Tory did IT against Sam at the end of All Valley

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Cobra Kai Season 4.]The end of Cobra Kai Season 4 offers a very big moment too Peyton list‘s Tory. After three seasons of intense training, while also fighting for her own reputation and doing everything she can to support her family, Tory finally gets to step into the spotlight as the first female champion of the All Valley Karate Tournament, overcoming her rival to claim the grand prize for Cobra Kai.

Yes, in the end, it’s revealed that the odds were in Tory’s favor thanks to Terry Silvers (Thomas Ian Griffithmanipulation, but there is still no denying that Tory is an extremely skilled fighter who has put a serious amount of work into getting himself on a better path in season 4. While there is some heartache for Sam (Mary Mouser), Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang, there is an undeniable excitement and satisfaction that comes from seeing Tory get what she so desperately wanted to achieve. As she explained to Robby (Tanner Buchanan) in episode 8, “All these Encino kids have their whole lives cut out for them. I never get that. But if I could just win this one, then I could look at that trophy and know I was the best at it. something.”

When Tory ends up scoring that trophy in the season finale, instead of celebrating her big win, the first thing she does is hurry up to Sam to ask if she’s okay. It’s a particularly strange moment because one would expect Tory to immediately enjoy the personal victory, but instead, after being declared the winner, she checks on her arch-enemy.

During a recent episode of Collider Ladies Night, I asked List what it was like to figure out the right way to approach just that beat. Here is what she said:

“I certainly juggled that possibility in my mind about how to react because I personally did not think Tory would go up and ask if Sam was okay. It was just really out of my pocket for me. But I could really like it.It was not on purpose and I also knew I would not be worried about her.I just wanted her to know that it was not on purpose and I did not want to hurt you.Maybe we are not friends but I did not want to hurt you and it made sense to me just to clear it up before I accepted whatever happened and it is a very surreal moment for Tory and what she has been working up to so long and what she wanted. “

Exactly there is the reason why the beat makes such a big impression. Yes, much of what we have come to learn about Tory, and much of what we have seen her do, suggests that her first thought at this moment would be to celebrate her own success – and possibly even go so far. to rub it in Sam’s face. But season 4 marked a major turning point for the character. No, she does not have to become friends with Sam, but she must push their rivalry aside to achieve her goals. Her reaction to her All Valley victory reflects the complexity of an individual in the midst of such a change and also the new mix of priorities at work.
