Jenna Ortega reveals that she made that scene with Roger L. Jackson on the set

With the new Scream film in the cinema on January 14, I had the opportunity to talk to the stars of the film, among others Jenna Ortega, Mikey Madison and Sonia Ammar. Avoiding spoilers was obviously a top priority during this pre-release chat, so I chose to lean on scenes we’ve seen in the film’s trailers, and that meant a certain scene with Ortega as Tara was fair game.

Yes, I’m well aware that there’s a whole lot of speculation as to whether the particular scene that is much talked about in the film’s promotional campaign is the film’s introductory murder scene. Do not be afraid! This interview is not about whether that is the case. We only discuss the technical challenges of filming such a scenography.

By the way, here’s what Ortega said when asked about the challenges of filming a scene where she’s essentially performing in front of a telephone:

“It’s a little difficult, especially because specifically in this scene there is a landline phone, and then there is also the mobile phone with apps for social media and iMessage and everything. So it was like playing two different scenes, which was a bit complicated and tricky, especially when you press the wrong button, when you press the wrong button, and it takes you to videos of soldiers being welcomed home from war of these German Shepherds and just really cute, cute videos when you try to be serious and give this scary performance. “

From there, Ortega tried to pinpoint a tip or trick to be able to perform such a scene, and she ended up highlighting the support she received from a Scream franchise icon.

“So there are a lot of technical details and weird things, but I want to say that the trick is – I do not know, it’s really easy when you have Mr. [Roger L.] Jackson on the phone makes the actual voice and does not really break the character in between taking to keep you humble and presently. So I mean, get yourself a real Ghostface. “
