Joe Avati: Comic sells Carlton North pad for great price in pre-auction deal

Italian-Australian comedian Joe Avati has landed a big prize and a slew of new fans – this time for his house design.

Italian-Australian comedian Joe Avati has scored an early sale of his luxury Carlton North pad as he prepares for his world tour next year.

The 481 Lygon St property sold for $3,625 million ahead of its scheduled auction this weekend, surpassing initial price expectations of $3.2 to $3.5 million.

Avati said the four-bedroom Victorian was the ultimate entertainer, and was “glad” that it was going to a new buyer who intended to use the house “as it was intended”.

“We’ve had some really big parties there and entertained some well-known comedians,” Avati said.

He spent two years designing the property’s renovation and another 16 months building it, inspired by his travels abroad.

It offers a taste of Italy with a Tuscan courtyard and Roman steam shower, in addition to a New York-style underground speakeasy with a 1,000-bottle wine cellar.

Avati said the popularity of his ad, which garnered more than 9,000 views on realestate.com.au, “has sparked a lot of interest from people asking me to design a home for them.”

“That’s an afterthought that could come out of this,” he added.

Nelson Alexander Kew partner Mark Verrocchi said the strip’s eclectic style was “a huge factor” in why it was so well received.

“It is a record price for a single facade terrace in the area,” said Mr Verrocchi.

“We had two interested parties for over $3.6 million, so the interest was very high. The buyer is very happy – he has bought one of the best properties in Carlton.”
